2013_Mt Helix Tournament LogoYouth Referee Program a Huge Success!

AYSO Region 89 La Mesa successfully trains over 25 new youth volunteer referees through a large scale mentorship program initiated during the 20th Anniversary Labor Day Classic Aug 31 – Sept. 2 using advanced communication wifi head sets in tournament games allowing the new referees to feel comfortable and help make the right calls on the field. Region 89 Commissioner Craig Angarola and Steve Cashman, 2013 Tournament Director said “The new youth referees and current upper division AYSO players being knowledgeable in the laws of the game are giving back to the core program as well as have earned valuable service award hours and certificates of appreciation this weekend that were a tremendous help in the success of our tournament.”

Each youth referee successfully passed the Basic Referee course held during an Area V Super Camp Training in early August preparing them for the new 2013-2014 season. According to one youth volunteer, “The training and mentorship I received during the event gave me the greater confidence to step into the referee role that I might not have done otherwise without their involvement.” Both Area V Director Mel Mann along with National AYSO Board Member Rick Russell who are certified Advanced Referees were onsite supporting the mentorship initiative at the tournament indicated the program was a huge success bringing new youth referees into the program supporting the AYSO mission.
